Tiny Core Linux 2.8 released

Tiny Core Linux 2.8 running Chromium. Tiny Core lead developer Robert Shingledecker has announced the availability of version 2.8 of Tiny Core Linux. Tiny Core is a minimal Linux distribution that is based on the 2.6 Linux kernel and is only about 10 MB in size. In addition to the usual bug fixes, the latest update includes a number of changes and updates.

The 2.8 release features version 1.1.10 of the Fast Light Toolkit (FLTK), updates to the the Fast Light Window Manager (FLWM) and a single directory for extensions and dependencies. Shingledecker says that, in addition to improving the flexibility in moving applications present upon boot, a singe directory "greatly improves systems resources by having a single copy of dependencies". Other changes include an updated and reorganised cPanel, better handling of multiple CD/DVD devices and quicker boot times with loop mount extensions.

The "tiny frugal" desktop distribution features the BusyBox tool collection and a minimal graphics system based on Tiny X and JWM. The core can run entirely in RAM, allowing for very quick booting. With the help of online repositories, Tiny Core Linux can be expanded to include additional applications.
