Wind River, which was taken over by Intel in early June, has released version 5.7 of the Tilcon Graphics Suite, software for developing graphical user interfaces for embedded applications. WindRiver acquired Tilcon Software in February 2009. The developers adapted the suite for Wind River's VxWorks 6.7 real-time operating system and also extended it to support the embedded specialist's current Linux platform (version 3.0).

Features of the graphics suite include host support for Vista and Linux as well as a new application template for the Eclipse-based Wind River Workbench that provides a high level of integration with other Wind River products. The vendor also extended the Tilcon Scalability Tool and adapted it for the Workbench.

The Interface Development Tool (IDT) uses a concept called host simulation to provide design, prototyping, simulation and testing facilities early on in the development of a GUI. The GUI Engine unites the developed user interface with the application, hardware and software and allows for changes to be made to the GUI code without impacting on the underlying application. This would allow, for example, an application developer to create the communications layer and logic for an application, and then fine tune the user interface without needing to rebuild the application itself. Videos of the Tilcon technology in action are available on the Wind River web site. Pricing of the suite was not disclosed.
