TightVNC Logo The TightVNC developers have announced the release of the first beta for what will become version 2.0 of their VNC server. While it currently only runs on Windows, the beta already offers numerous advancements in terms of file transfer, user interface and access control. According to TightVNC developer Constantin Kaplinsky, the VNC server has been "redesigned and reimplemented from scratch".

The server's remote desktop control now consists of a Windows service and a dedicated user interface; according to Kaplinsky, this resolves previous "fast user switching" and terminal problems under Vista and Windows 7. Previously called "TightVNC Tray Icon", the user interface will, from this version onwards, run as a separate process that can be protected via a separate password. The developers have also updated the server's screen refresh and file transfer, with the latter now allowing multiple files or folders to be deleted, renamed, created on, or transferred between computers. Data compression provides improved performance, and files are no longer restricted to the old file size limit of 4 GB.

TightVNC 2.0 Beta 1 is compatible with Windows 2000 to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (32 and 64-bit systems). The beta's installer and source codes can be found on the project's website. TightVNC is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
