Following in the footsteps of Outlook and Zimbra, open source mail client Thunderbird is now also able to interface with document management system O3Spaces Workplace. Using a plug-in, Thunderbird is now able to archive emails directly to the Workplace document repository. Files saved in the Workplace can also be directly attached to emails. A plug-in for groupware application Zarafa is, according to the vendor, also in the works.

The Dutch company's document management system is available in four editions, three of which – Professional, Enterprise and On Demand – are commercial, with the fourth a free (but not open source) downloadable Community Edition with restricted functionality, for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. O3Spaces integrates directly into office suites such as Microsoft Office and OpenOffice. The vendor is positioning its server application as a cross-platform alternative to Microsoft's SharePoint.
