Thunderbird 8 released

Mozilla has released version 8.0 of its open source Thunderbird email and news client. The update is based on the Gecko 8 engine and improves attachment list accessibility. It includes new search and find shortcuts, and the folder switching pane has been removed.

Add-ons that have been installed by a third party are now disabled by default. When a user upgrades to 8.0 they are presented with a one-off dialog where they have the option to approve any third-party add-ons which have already been installed. Various platform fixes improve the application's overall stability.

Thunderbird 8 closes six security holes. Three of these were rated as critical issues: memory corruption while profiling using firebug, code execution via NoWaiveWrapper and miscellaneous memory hazards have been fixed. The remaining high-risk vulnerabilities include two cross-origin theft bugs and a potential cross-site scripting (XSS) hole.

Thunderbird binaries are released under the Mozilla Thunderbird End-User Software License Agreement and the source code is released under disjunctive tri-licensing that includes the Mozilla Public Licence, GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1.
