Thunderbird logo Following the release of Firefox 6, Thunderbird 6 has swiftly followed to refresh the Mozilla email client. The latest version of Thunderbird is based on the Gecko 6 engine, the same as Firefox 6. Windows 7 users will find an improved theme, support for Windows 7 Jump Lists added to the mail platform, and a number of fixes applied to the Outlook email import; on Linux, the default mail client checking will now work correctly with newer Linux distributions. On all platforms users should see fixes and improvements applied to the user interface and platform specific speedups and stabilisation.

According to Mozilla's announcement, which like Firefox 6's announcement didn't mention the version number, there have also been updates for the Mozilla Thunderbird Add-ons, including Lightning Calendar, Conversation View and Open Search, which can be installed from the Add-ons Manager in Thunderbird.

More information is available in the Thunderbird 6 release notes. Existing users can bring up the About window and the mail client will check and update itself. New users can download it from the Thunderbird project web site, or from the Localised Versions download page. Thunderbird binaries are released under the Mozilla Thunderbird End-User Software License Agreement and the source code is released under disjunctive tri-licensing that includes the Mozilla Public Licence, GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1.
