Thunderbird 3.0 beta turns into alpha

The development schedule for Mozilla Messaging's Thunderbird 3 has been changed as the next beta milestone release is being rescheduled to be a third alpha release. The news came in a blog posting from Dan Mosdale, a Mozilla developer, who said "While we've been pretty clear for a while that calling something a beta doesn't mean that we're feature complete, what we've got now feels like it's pretty far from being representative".

Large amounts of work appear still to be needed on Thunderbird 3.0 to move from alpha to beta; Mosdale pointed to visible changes, such as a new tab model, reworked message view, search bar and calendar integration, and to less visible internal changes, which would not have been ready for the originally planned beta release. As beta releases garner more attention, Thunderbird's developers decided to change the milestone to another alpha release and continue to work towards what they feel is a good representation of what they aim to deliver. A new schedule of development milestones is yet to be published.
