Debian logo After last year's uncontested election, three candidates have put themselves forward for the highest office in the Debian community this year. The candidates are: Stefano Zacchiroli (co-maintainer of the package tracking system), who has held the post since 2010, Wouter Verhelst (autobuild infrastructure team), standing for the third time following unsuccessful campaigns in 2007 and 2010, and Gergely Nagy (buglist tracking, Google Summer of Code admin team).

The official election platform hosts contributions from all three candidates, detailing their manifestos and providing insights into their previous work within Debian. Debian maintainers have until 31 March to quiz the candidates on their opinions and their plans for the future of the Debian Project. The two week voting phase commences on 1 April. The new project leader will then take office in mid-April.

The Debian project leader is the outward face of the Debian community and, in conjunction with the technical committee, determines the direction of future development. Elections to the post of Debian project leader are held every spring.
