openSUSE Logo The openSUSE project release team has announced the arrival of a third milestone for version 12.1 of its openSUSE operating system. Aimed at developers, testers and early adopters, the latest development preview is the third of six planned milestone releases; the fourth milestone is expected to arrive on 11 August. The final version of openSUSE 12.1 is scheduled for release on 11 November 2011.

The openSUSE 12.1 milestone 3 is based on the 3.0 rc7 Linux kernel – Linux 3.0 was released earlier today – and includes a number of package updates, such as Thunderbird 5.0, Firefox 5, Python 3.2 and LibreOffice 3.3.3. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback, specifically on systemd which is being used in openSUSE for the first time, and report any bugs that they find.

Further information can be found in the official release announcement; a list of the most annoying bugs is also provided. The third milestone for openSUSE 12.1 is available to download as a DVD or LiveCD image from the project's web site. The latest stable release is openSUSE 11.4 from early March.
