Sourcefabric has announced the release of Newscoop 4, its open source content management system for news. Newscoop is used by independent news organisations such as ElPeriódico de Guatemala, Yemen Times, and Switzerland’s TagesWoche, and has been developed to fulfil Sourcefabric's mission to support independent news sources. The highlights of the new edition of the web-based platform are the new adaptive CSS themes, New Custodian and Rock Star, which can be downloaded and installed from the Sourcefabric site.

Written in $gimme – a news-centric template language that Sourcefabric created based on PHP's Smarty framework – the new themes contain all the elements needed for a web site design and can be assigned to, switched between, cloned or adapted between multiple publications. The theme's adaptive CSS allows content to be displayed in a size and layout that is appropriate for the device being used to view the pages. Images can also be rendered in different resolutions so they can appear in different areas of a publication and each version of the image can be individually cropped.

The new release also features a reworked media archive with support for uploading multiple files, faster search and slideshows, and drag and drop front page management. There is also an improved comment interface which allows alternative services like Disqus to be plugged in, and support for visitor profiles, to enable commenting and topic following. Other changes include the addition of the ability to create thematic article groups, an improved SoundCloud plugin and better user management.

Newscoop 4 is available to download for Ubuntu 10.04, Debian GNU/Linux 6, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and Fedora 14; an installation guide is available along with manual installation instructions. Source code can be found on the project's Sourceforge site. Sourcefabric also offers Newscoop Pro, a commercial hosted service for Newscoop. NewsScoop is licensed under the GPLv3.
