Linux Foundation Compliance Program Logo In August at the Boston LinuxCon 2010 the Linux Foundation announced the launch of its Open Compliance Program. As part of this program, the Foundation said that towards the end of the year it would be publishing a Self Assessment Checklist that would help companies ensure their compliance with open source licensing. This checklist was published on the foundations web site on Monday.

While there are specialists for hire that provide a compliance auditing service, the checklist can be used by companies that wish to perform their own auditing or simply wish to gain a better understanding of compliance issues. Commenting on its blog, the Foundation says "Companies can use the Self-Assessment Checklist confidentially to assess progress in implementing a rigorous open source compliance process. The checklist can help you prioritise process improvement efforts on the areas of greatest payoff. You can also use the checklist during supplier selection to assess a supplier’s compliance practices and gauge the likely reliability of its open source disclosures."

In addition to the Self Assessment Checklist, the Linux Foundation also provides software Compliance Tools, the Open Compliance Directory and Rapid Alert System and training and education on compliance issues including training courses, white papers and other information.
