The H Week - CeBIT, a bid on Novell, Ubuntu's new look and botnet arrests

Highlights for The H in this past week include CeBIT, a bid on Novell, the IIPA attacked countries over their open source policies and Ubuntu announcing a new look. A scrap developed over a botched patch for a PHP extension and Spanish police closed a major botnet operation.

Apple started legal action against HTC regarding patent infringements this week, sending a chill through the Android community. In a surprise move hedge fund managers Elliott Associates LP made an unsolicited bid to acquire Novell. Oracle talked about the future of OpenSolaris. The Open Source Initiative roundly criticised the IIPA for its suggestion that the US blacklist countries that officially support open source. Linux distributors closed security holes in the sudo command and Canonical ditched its trademark brown and announced new branding and livery for Ubuntu.

The developer of the Suhosin security extension and the Debian developers got into heated discussion over a defective security patch. Spanish Police announced arrests connected with closing down Mariposa, a major international botnet. Apple hired the ex-Mozilla head of security, Window Snyder. Microsoft announced this months patches, but still aren't addressing known vulnerabilities and analysts report that scareware is getting much more aggressive.
