DesktopBSD logo The announcement of DesktopBSD 1.7, the first release from the DesktopBSD project since January 2008's version 1.6, carries with it the news that the project leader is calling this the "last and final release". Peter Hofer says that he finds himself with insufficient free time to work on the FreeBSD and KDE desktop based distribution and that he "no longer desires to keep developing and maintaining this project".

The DesktopBSD 1.7 release is built with FreeBSD 7.2p3, uses KDE 3.5.10 as a desktop environment and X.Org 7.4 as X server. It also includes OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 and a pre-installed Java SE 6 environment. Full details of this last and final release are in the release notes. Hofer hopes that, as the project is based on FreeBSD, any users will still be able to get support and updates in the future. The next release of FreeBSD, FreeBSD 8.0, is expected to be published in early October.
