The Document Foundation announces RC3 of LibreOffice 3.3

The Document Foundation has announced the third release candidate for LibreOffice 3.3. LibreOffice is the free open source office suite that forked from OpenOffice.org when that project was inherited by Oracle through its acquisition of the original project sponsor, Sun Microsystems.

As with a number of other open source projects inherited through the acquisition, the project community was unable to come to an understanding with Oracle over the future of OpenOffice.org and the LibreOffice fork was created.

The LibreOffice suite includes six applications; Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base, complete with a "Getting started" guide. Licensed under the LGPLv3, the first version of LibreOffice is based on OpenOffice 3.3.0; this is the source of its version number – the development of OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 itself is currently at RC8.

As with all development releases, the developers note that use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter via the FreeDesktop Bugzilla web page. New contributors to the project are invited to contribute code, provide translations or make a donation.
