Terracotta logo Terracotta, the US Java specialist, has released version 3.1 of its Terracotta Java clustering software. The new release includes Terracotta for Hibernate, a plug-in distributed cache for the Hibernate ORM (Object-Relational Mapping) framework. The new plug-in is based on Ehcache, who's founding developer joined Terracotta in August. The new plug-in will allow developers to use Terracotta as a distributed cache for Hibernate's queries; Terracotta claims to be able to "slash latency times to typically under 1 millisecond" for Hibernate based applications by using it as a second level cache.

The software is available as Terracotta ES, under the TPL, a modified version of the Mozilla Public Licence. It is also released as commercial enterprise versions Terracotta EX and FX, with different levels of support and with high-end enterprise management features in the FX version.
