Terminal server for Debian Linux
Version 3.0 of the open source x2go terminal server for Linux has been available to download since the end of April. The software, code named Uthörn, was developed for Debian 5.0. The new version aims to improve print server functionality. According to the release notes, it compresses print jobs before sending them, reducing data transmissions by up to 90 per cent. The server is now capable of also outputting sound from sound servers like aRts, ESD (Enlightened Sound Daemon or EsounD) or PulseAudio to clients through the network.
Several x2go servers can be grouped and controlled using the LDAP directory service. A load balancer distributes requests and sessions evenly across the group. Users can also share tutorial or maintenance sessions that can be suspended and then continued later on.
Suitable terminal clients are available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. X2go 3.0 can be installed from a dedicated repository under Debian. Further set up and installation information is available from the project's website and in the x2go forum.
