After more than a year in development and with more than 270 bug fixes and changes, version 5.3 of the Apache Tapestry Java web framework has been announced by the developers. The team says that, compared to the previous version, data throughput has been improved by up to 40 per cent for very large web sites, and memory consumption reduced by 30 per cent. Tapestry 5.3 also includes new components and functions.

The Tapestry framework now contains a range of new functions, for example, the Underscore JavaScript library for functional programming support in the browser, a new central mechanism for handling user alerts, and debugging improvements for page and component classes in development mode. Developers now have the option to compress their JavaScript and CSS files with YUICompressor.

While updating from version 5.2 to Tapestry 5.3 is possible, the developers point out that several obsolete classes and methods have been removed – and that existing applications should, therefore, be checked and, if necessary, modified before the new version is installed. The framework is primarily available via Maven, but the source code can also be obtained from the archive and is published under the Apache Licence 2.0.
