According to the latest figures from research and consultancy firm Strategy Analytics, in the fourth quarter of last year the market share for Android tablets rose from 29.0% to 39.1%. However, Apple retained its dominant market share of tablet sales, falling from 68% to 58% compared to the same period in 2010; Apple's overall tablet sales rose by 111%, from 7.3 to 15.4 million units. The total number of tablets shipped during Q4 2011 is given as 26.8 million, an increase of 150% over 2010.

These figures do not reflect as well as it might seem at first sight on the general Android tablet market; Strategy Analytics includes the Barnes and Noble Nook and the recent and popular Kindle Fire among Android tablets. According to a report on the Laptop Mag blog, the author of the Strategy Analytics study has said that the Kindle Fire and Nook account for 40% of Android tablet shipments: approximately 4.2 million of a total 10.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2011. The detailed breakdown by manufacturer of Android systems has not yet been released.
