TIOBE Logo Of the languages listed in the TIOBE index, Python was the fastest growing programming language of 2010. The scripting language was therefore crowned language of the year in the January edition of the index of popular programming languages. Objective-C, used to develop iPhone and iPad apps, had long been the favourite to take the award, but its popularity appears to have dwindled a little in recent months. Its growth rate of 1.6% was only enough for the runner-up spot behind Python (+1.81%).

Started in 2000, the TIOBE Programming Index is compiled using data on skilled developers, courses and software vendors determined using Google, MSN, Yahoo, Wikipedia and YouTube. Java has occupied the top spot in the index for several years, with the brief exception of the April 2010 index. Other top ten languages include C, C++, PHP, C#, (Visual) Basic, Perl and Ruby.
