TIOBE language index: Erlang, Scala and JavaFX Script near top 20
According to the February issue of the TIOBE Programming Community Index, which provides an indication of the popularity of programming languages, not much has changed since last month. Apple's Objective-C and Google's Go programming language are still gaining popularity and currently hold the 12th and 13th positions. Java, C and PHP have held the top three positions since September of 2009, when the scripting language passed C++. Along with Microsoft's Visual Basic, these languages hold this month's top 5 positions.
C#, Python, Perl, Delphi and JavaScript continued to hold the same positions, at sixth to tenth, as they did a year ago. The big news is the possibility that Scratch, Scala, Erlang and JavaFX Script could potentially break into the top 20 as soon as next month.
Started in 2000, the monthly index is calculated using link data to certified programmers, training and software vendors, that is assembled for TIOBE via the Google, Bing, Yahoo, Wikipedia and YouTube search engines.
