The HTC G1 phone, the first phone to run the Google originated Android open source operating system, is coming to Europe. T-Mobile made the announcement at the start of the launch of the phone.

Android is a Linux based operating system for mobile devices which was announced in November 2007, and is currently developed by the Open Handset Alliance, a group made up of, among others, Google, HTC, Intel, Motorola and Samsung.

The G1 has launched in the US for $179, and will be available there on October 22nd. T-Mobile says to expect the G1 in the UK in early November, with the rest of Europe following in first quarter 2009. The phone has 3G, touch screen, slider keyboard, GPS and Wifi. Among the Android applications, Google Streetview was demonstrated with a GPS compass mode synchronising the view with the direction the phone was pointing, and always on instant messaging.

T-Mobile made much at the launch of the open source nature of Android, with a video of developers talking about the advantages of the open model of development. T-Mobile, and Google, hope to create an ecosystem of third party developers using the Android Marketplace.
