Nokia logo Nokia has completed placing the Symbian source code back online at symbian.nokia.com, allowing Nokia and independent developers to view the code which was taken offline when the Symbian Foundation's websites were closed down as part of the ramping down of the Foundation. Nokia is using Git to manage the hosting of the Symbian source code but Nokia requires developers to register for access to the code; this process includes agreeing to terms and conditions. The code itself is under the Nokia Symbian Licence, which is listed at the end of the terms and conditions and is, upon cursory examination, not related to any other open source licence.

According to the AllAboutSymbian blog, potential collaborators are being advised to contact the package owners at Nokia and discuss with them "if they have any enhancements that are really useful". They should get in touch by using the "Contact Us" page on the Symbian.nokia.com site. The Documentation Wiki, Reference Wiki and Adaptation Guide are all listed as "Coming Soon"; Nokia say they will be online "over the next few weeks".

Nokia describes the new arrangements as its new "open and direct model" and says it's the most appropriate approach to its current needs for Symbian. Although it will offer build tools, there will be no pre-built Symbian images hosted on the site. The company will also no longer be referring to Symbian^3 and Symbian^4 as official releases but will work on delivering a "continuous evolution of the platform".
