According to a surveyPDF carried out earlier this month by IDC analysts and mobile app development tool vendor Appcelerator the majority of software developers see Android as having the greatest potential of the current major mobile operating systems. Just under 60% of the nearly 2,400 app developers surveyed view Android as the operating system of the future for mobile applications. A comparatively small 35% of respondents see Apple's iOS as having the greatest potential. The same survey in June found the gap between the two operating systems to be 10% smaller.

72% of developers see Android as best positioned for use on a wide range of devices – iOS clocks up just 25% in this category. Apple continues to lead the field in all categories relating to short-term revenue opportunities. Other platforms, such as HP's WebOS, BlackBerry and the new Windows Phone 7, remain also-rans.

Respondents expressed significant interest in developing applications for Google TV (44%) and Apple TV (40%). Developers are also keen on developing apps for Android tablets, with 62% expressing an interest, comparable to the 58% who expressed an interest in iPad development in January. Interest in developing for tablets based on other operating systems trails far behind – WebOS and BlackBerry tablets chalk up just 16%. Respondents expressed concern about the fragmentation of Android. iOS scored well in this area with 74% of respondents considering it the least fragmented operating system, compared to just 11% for Android.
