Sun Microsystems has introduced its Sun Web Stack open source web package with business support at OSCON 2008. Sun Web Stack was previously named "Cool Stack".

The stack, which is also referred to as AMP (Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl), is due to be available for Solaris as SAMP (Solaris+AMP) in the third quarter of 2008, followed by LAMP (Linux+AMP) in the fourth quarter. Releases for Windows and other operating systems are due to follow later.

The Sun Web Stack includes Apache 2.2.8, Apache Memcached 1.25, MySQL 5.1, PHP 5.2.5, Ruby 1.8.6, Rails 1.2.3, lighttpd 1.4.18, Perl 5.8.8 and Squid Proxy 2.16.x. Sun plans to offer enterprise level support for the stack, and version control management across the supported platforms.

Sun also plans to publish the source code for Java System Web Server 7.0 and Java System Web Proxy under a BSD licence as part of the OpenSolaris Web Stack sub-project in the third quarter of 2008. Jim Jagielski, of the Apache Software Foundation said "Sun's release of their Web and Proxy server code with a BSD licence is proof of their involvement and commitment to open source. I am quite excited by the opportunities and possibilities that this provides, both as an Open Source community member, but also as a director, member and developer within the Apache Software Foundation".
