Glynn Foster, OpenSolaris product manager at Sun Microsystems, has announced that the company will discontinue production of the Solaris Express Community Edition (SXCE) by the end of October. The move is part of a consolidation of how OpenSolaris and Solaris are distributed. SXCE was the name given to the bi-weekly updates which provided of the latest (Open)Solaris code in the form of ISO images. With the end of SXCE, Sun intends to continue the bi-weekly release schedule, but will now move towards producing native Image Packaging System (IPS) packages of the latest Solaris packages, allowing users to upgrade from an existing release or pre-release.

Solaris Express Community Edition was an unsupported binary release intended specifically for OpenSolaris developers and was code named "Nevada". Built from the latest OpenSolaris source, it included additional technology which had yet to be included the OpenSolaris source base and was considered to be "bleeding-edge".
