Sun releases Solaris 10 10/09

Sun Microsystems has announced the availability of the 10/09 update for its Solaris 10 operating system (OS). The latest release includes a number of bug fixes, feature updates and expanded support for new processors.

In addition to several efficiency and performance improvements, Solaris 10 10/09 includes new updates for Solaris ZFS which integrates the ability to use solid-state drive (SSD) technology for data caching and high volume transactional applications. Administrators can now set usage limits, such as by individual file system, user or group.

SPARC processor performance has been enhanced and Intel's Xeon 5500 series processors now use even less power by adjusting processor power on-demand in response to system utilisation. Additionally, Solaris 10 includes a new automated framework for installing patches in single user mode and parallel patch installation of virtualised Solaris Containers.

Solaris 10 10/09 is available to download as a free ISO image file. Solaris registration is free and support subscriptions are available from $324 per year. According to Sun, Solaris is aimed at administrators and enterprise developers and OpenSolaris is aimed at students, Web 2.0 developers and open source OS developers.
