Sun Microsystems has announced the release of the first beta of the MySQL SDBC driver, aka Sun Connector for MySQL and formerly known as the MySQL Native Driver. The beta can be used by OpenOffice 3.1 to connect to a MySQL server running version 5.1 or later.

The extension integrates seamlessly into OpenOffice and is installed through the Extension Manager. After the extension is installed, users can work on multiple MySQL schemata (databases) at the same time, without the need for a Java Runtime Environment, a driver manager or an additional connector. The extension is available for Windows, Linux (Intel 32 and 64 bit), Solaris SPARC, Solaris (Intel), and Mac OS X (Intel).

The extension may crash on Windows systems that have an incompatible version of libmysql installed. According to the post, however, this should be fixed in the final release. As this is a beta release, use in production environments or on mission critical systems is not recommended.

More details about the release, including a quick start guide, can be found on the Sun MySQL Connector Wiki. The Sun Connector for MySQL is available to download from the OpenOffice.org extension repository.
