The Debian developers have announced that Stefano Zacchiroli achieved victory in the Debian Project Leader (DPL) elections held between the 2nd and the 15th of April. Zacchiroli succeeds Steve McIntyre who held the position the two previous years. There were three other candidates apart from Zacchiroli. Before the election, the Debian community had the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates and follow the discussions on the Debian Vote mailing list. 886 Debian developers were eligible to vote, and the election turnout was more than 50 per-cent.

Zacchiroli, previously the co-maintainer of the Package Tracking System, had already stood as candidate for this position in 2009. The developer has contributed to the Debian project for the past nine years, his areas of work including quality control as well as the maintenance and sometimes the backporting of more than 90 packages such as Vim and numerous Python packages. He was also involved in the design of 80 further packages. Zacchiroli will now set the project's political course for the coming year.
