Gamua, the company behind the open source Starling framework, has released version 1.3 of the game development tool. Starling is designed for developing games in Flash and ActionScript 3 and supports GPU-acceleration of the applications without the need to directly use the low-level Stage3D APIs. Starling 1.3 includes new filters and enhancements to the Tween animation API. A new AssetManager class allows developers to keep track of textures, audio files and fonts.

Starling, which has recently been used to develop such games as Angry Birds Star Wars, Rollercoaster Mania and Gangster Squad, can be extended with Josh Tynjala's Feathers UI components. Feathers 1.0 allows developers to build hardware-accelerated user interfaces for their games on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac OS X or – by using Flash Player – several browsers.

Starling 1.3 and Feathers 1.0 are released under the Simplified BSD License and the source code for the framework and the user interface components are available on GitHub. Starling requires Adobe AIR 3.15 or Flash 11.5 to run.
