A developer preview has been made available of the next major version, 2.0, of the web application framework, SproutCore. This version is still undergoing development and its APIs are still likely to change. In the announcement on the SproutCore blog, Tom Dale describes SproutCore 2.0 as having been redesigned "from the ground up to support every kind of web application." The most significant change is that the system is now based 100 per cent on HTML, CSS and Handlebars, moving away from coding using JavaScript APIs.

More features are expected to be announced during the coming months of development, bringing the code up to feature parity with version 1.6 – currently at release candidate 2 stage – and introducing a data store, optional build tools, and a new user interface intended to be competitive with "any native widget library". Instead of the command line build tools, the SproutCore JavaScript file can now simply be included directly from the developer's HTML page.

The preview of 2.0 is available to download (direct download) with source code is available from github; further information is available in the SproutCore Guides. The source code for release candidate 2 of SproutCore 1.6 is available to download from github under the terms of the MIT licence.
