SpringSource announces enterprise version of Tomcat

At its SpringOne Americas 2008 developer conference, SpringSource, the company behind the Spring framework, introduced an enterprise version of Tomcat. Named tc Server, it is targetted at enterprise customers. tc Server is a variant of the servlet container developed under the umbrella of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) .

In addition to the traditional features of Tomcat, tc Server also includes extended and centralised capabilities for troubleshooting and monitoring Tomcat server farms from a single console. This in turn allows applications for deploy/start/stop/undeploy to be configured either individually, or on a group of servers, and allows Tomcat instances to be started and stopped from the console. Diagnostic capabilities include the detection of deadlocks, incremental tracing, error identification and troubleshooting.

SpringSource will offer services and support for the server; SpringSource took over Covalent Technologies in January 2008, a company focussed on providing services and products based on Apache Software Foundation projects. Because SpringSource took over Covalent, SpringSource are able to report responsibility for around 80 per cent of the commits to the Tomcat project.

The SpringSource tc Server will be available for the major operating systems, 32 and 64-bit chip architectures and various Java and JVM implementations from January 2009.
