The Spring community and SpringSource have released a new version of their tool suite for Spring, which sees the available tools split into two separate suites. The newly released version 3.0.0 of the Spring Tool Suite and Groovy/Grails Tool Suite are now completely open source and can be deployed independently of each other. This enables Groovy/Grails developers to skip the previously time-consuming process of configuring the software with extensions for their platform.

Both packages are based on the latest Juno release of Eclipse and include the vFabric tc Server, SpringSource's Spring optimised drop-in replacement for Tomcat, with the Spring Insight console for graphical views of application performance.

The Spring Tool Suite includes a complete set of applications for working with Spring projects. It supports the Spring Framework, as well as Spring Batch, Spring Webflow, Spring Data and many other components. It also includes Spring Roo as well as the latest Maven Eclipse integration and as a suite broadly corresponds to the previous SpringSource Tool Suite.

The new, separate Groovy/Grails Tool Suite is, as the name suggests, designed for Groovy and Grails application development. Groovy Eclipse is pre-installed by the suite and supports direct deployment on tc servers. A ready-to-use Grails installation is also part of the package.

The Spring IDE was already available as open source, and combined with the components of the two tool suites, all of the code is now available on GitHub under the Eclipse Public License. Commercial add-ons, such as integration for Spring Roo, various wizards, refactoring tools and templates for Spring, have also been transferred to the Spring IDE project. Some components have been merged into entirely new open source projects such as Eclipse Integration for tc Server.
