Spring Framework Co-founder Juergen Hoeller has announced the availability of the third release candidate (RC3) for version 3.0 of the open source Spring framework for Java applications. The third release candidate includes a number of "enhancements" and updates over the previous RC2 release.

The latest preview release features extended functionality in the new <mvc:*> namespace and additional start up/shut down behaviour revisions. While Spring 2.5 currently supports several of the higher-level features of Java 5, version 3.0 of the Spring Framework is now fully Java 5 based, so Java 5 or above is now required. Hoeller notes that Hibernate 3.2 or above and Tiles 2.1 are also required and that Tiles 2.0 is no longer supported.

More details about the release can be found in the release announcement. Spring Framework 3.0 RC3 is available to download and is licensed under version 2.0 of the Apache License. A final release date for version 3.0 of the Spring Framework, however, has yet to be confirmed but Hoeller says that it "will eventually go GA in mid December".
