The Spacewalk project has released version 1.0 of its system management software. The software no longer depends on HAL and, in Fedora 12, uses Tomcat 6, which comes with this distribution. However, the management software still requires an Oracle database to operate, as the developers say the PostgreSQL support continues to be in development and still hasn't become functional. In their release email, they ask the community for assistance to achieve progress in this area.

Spacewalk was launched two years ago and is based on the Red Hat Network (RHN) Satellite Server, whose code was made available by Red Hat at the time. Similar to the software behind the Red Hat Network, Spacewalk allows an organisation's PCs and servers to be managed using a web interface, and any improvements developed within the Spacewalk project are also fed back into the Red Hat Network. However, Spacewalk is primarily intended for distributions based in the Red Hat environment – apart from Fedora, these mainly include Red Hat Enterprise Linux and offshoots such as CentOS and Scientific Linux. Spacewalk is licensed under the GPLv2 and is available to download from the Spacewalk project site.
