Nominations for the fourth annual SourceForge Community Choice Awards are now open. SourceForge.net is the largest online open source hosting site and hosts over 230,000 projects. Last years winners included the OpenOffice.org office suite, the VLC media player (formerly called VideoLAN Client) and three time winner phpMyAdmin, a MySQL administration tool.

Categories include the best project for multimedia, best new project and best project for enterprise applications. This year sees the addition of five new award categories, including the best commercial open source project, best project for academia, best project for government and best visual design. This brings the total number of entry categories up to twelve. Projects with the highest number of nominations in each category will move on to become finalists. Nominations close on the 29th of May and the finalists will be announced on the 22nd of June, after which voting will open. Voting will close on the 20th of July and the winners will be announced on July 23rd at OSCON 2009 taking place in San Jose from the 21st to the 25th.
