Sony's Xperia Tablet Z
Zoom Sony's Xperia Tablet Z - Now with binary drivers to enable open source Android

As part of its AOSP for Xperia project, Sony has released proprietary Wi-Fi drivers and OpenGL graphics libraries of its Xperia S smartphone, Xperia Z smartphone and Xperia Tablet Z. The company has opened GitHub repositories for all three devices that include Android source code from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), the proprietary drivers and instructions to build AOSP images with the drivers and libraries and then install them on the company's devices.

The proprietary components such as the Wi-Fi drivers are available as binaries that can be downloaded in ZIP archives from Sony's developer web site. Using the AOSP source code together with the proprietary binaries provided by Sony will make it easier for developers to develop third party firmware images for the Xperia devices. This should enable developer communities such as CyanogenMod to support these devices more easily. Sony calls developers who want to contribute to the AOSP code to do so on the Xperia GitHub page.
