Sony Ericsson unveils Cross-platform development environment for Android & Symbian
At this year's Web 2.0 EXPO in New York, Sony Ericsson announced the availability of a beta version of its new cross-platform WebSDK development environment for Android and Symbian. According to Sony Ericsson, the WebSDK is a suite of mobile development tools that lets both web and mobile developers to create applications for the company's Android OS and Symbian phones.
The software development kit (SDK) was created in collaboration with the PhoneGap open source community and specifically aimed at the company's upcoming XPERIA X10 Android-based phone and its recently launched Satio Symbian-based handset. Christopher David, Head of Developer and Partner Engagement at Sony Ericsson said “With the Sony Ericsson WebSDK our focus is on bringing all the capabilities of web technologies to mobile applications and giving web developers wide access to easy-to-use tools and mobile phone platforms.”
With the WebSDK, developers can create mobile apps using HTML, CSS and JavaScript programming. The inclusion of a bridge component allows JavaScript to access platform features and data, such as the accelerometer, camera, contacts and GPS.
The 9.2 MB Sony Ericsson WebSDK Beta is available to download from developer.sonyericsson.com. A Getting Started Guide is also provided.
