Songbird presents its users with a new icon for the release of version 1.0
Jumping from version 0.7 to 1.0, the platform-independent Songbird open source media player has flown the nest. The Mozilla-based media player can be given a variety of "plumages" (skins) and can conveniently be customised using the add-on mechanism it borrowed from Firefox/Thunderbird. Add-ons range from adapted Firefox extensions and various different views, including the MediaFlow view, which is similar to iTunes' CoverFlow, to developer tools.

While the developers have again improved performance in this version, the player, designed for managing large music collections, still lacks several of the features available in traditional media players. It is unable to grab audio CDs or synchronise with an iPhone/iPod touch, although it can synchronise with other devices including MTP devices. On the other hand, and true to its heritage, it offers excellent internet-related features and collects additional information like lyrics, band details, tour dates, images and videos from various web services. In addition, Songbird obtains recommendations from the Last.fm music community and transmits track info to this service, to Twitter ("LiveTweeter") and to instant messaging services. The program is available for Windows XP/Vista, Mac OS X and Linux.
