Songbird logo The popular iPod add-on for the open source media player Songbird contains an error which may cause it to delete content from an iPod, without first asking for confirmation from the user.

Songbird, which was recently updated to version 1.1.1, allows add-ons to add extra features to the Mozilla-based media player. The iPod add-on, which has been downloaded over 280,000 times, is designed to allow users to play back and synchronise music between the Songbird library and the iPod itself. According to a blog post on the Songbird website, users should disable or un-install it for the time being. The add-on is still available on the Songbird site, but it has been removed from the list of recommended add-ons.

More information about the bug and any updates about the iPod add-on will be posted to their Bugzilla post.

Update (20/03/09): According to a Songbird blog post, the iPod add-on has now been updated to fix the iPod file deletion bug. Those users with the auto-update function enabled will automatically receive the update. Alternatively the updated add-on is available to download now from the Songbird site.
