On next Tuesday 14th, the Illumos Foundation will reveal the details of OpenIndiana. OpenIndiana is to be a server or desktop operating system based on Illumos, the recently created fork of OpenSolaris. Project Lead, EveryCity's Alisdair Lumsden said that, "this announcement will deliver the distribution the community has long sought after."

OpenIndiana is described as a "fork and continuation" of OpenSolaris. It is designed to complement Illumos by building on its foundation to provide a ready to use live distribution. It will also be an alternative to Oracle's Solaris and Solaris Express, but unlike Solaris, it will have an open development model and community participation.

Oracle recently closed OpenSolaris development, moving to a model where the company develops the next version, Solaris 11, without community involvement. Oracle plans to ship Solaris 11 Express as a binary only distribution later in the year.

Further details are sparse in advance of the launch event being held in London, but the openindiana.org web site has been set up and the project can be followed on Twitter as @openindiana. Details of the launch announcement are available on the OpenIndiana site; attendees will need to pre-register.
