Sun Microsystems has released Solaris 10 10/08. The new release offers a number of improvements which were developed and tested as part of the open source OpenSolaris project. The new version of Solaris can now be installed using only ZFS on all filesystems; previously, a UFS formatted filesystems was needed for the root and boot filesystems. Migrating virtual machines within containers has become easier, and Solaris 10/08 now also supports Intel's latest Xeon generation. Other improvements include the support of 256 CPUs with x84 based systems and a more unified boot architecture for SPARC, based on the x86 boot system. Full details of the changes are in the "What's New in Solaris 10 10/08" document.

Solaris 10/08 is available to download from Sun's website. CD and DVD media kits are not available yet. Unlike OpenSolaris, Solaris 10/8 is licensed under a limited licence, but can be used for free for a number of user scenarios. Sun promises complete backwards compatibility to previous versions of Solaris 10, which means all applications should continue to operate smoothly after the upgrade has been installed.
