A volunteer effort by the openSUSE Goblin Team has produced the first release of Smeegol, described as an "openSUSE interpretation of the MeeGo user experience". The developers believe that wedding the openSUSE infrastructure with the MeeGo user interface will allow users to draw on the openSUSE ecosystem with applications available from Build Service repositories and third party repositories.

Smeegol includes the Banshee music player, a newer version of the mail and agenda client Evolution Express and expands the social network support to include Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Flickr and Digg. It also offers a choice of either Firefox or Chromium as a browser and manages network connectivity using the familiar NetworkManager. The developers do note that "unfortunately Smeegol does not play well with virtualised environments", a fact confirmed by early testing at The H where the Meego experience would either not start or rendered with major display corruption.

Smeegol is available for download as a live CD for 32 and 64 bit systems, as an "one click install" for existing openSUSE users, and as a SUSE Studio image which can be cloned and customised.
