Monty Program Ab and SkySQL have announced that both companies will be merging to pool their expertise in MariaDB support and development. Monty Program was founded by MySQL creator Michael "Monty" Widenius and is the originator of the MySQL fork MariaDB. SkySQL was created by ex-MySQL executives and investors after Oracle bought MySQL from Sun with the goal to provide support for the MySQL/MariaDB ecosystem; the company also offers training and specialised support for high availability systems.

According to both companies, the merger "reunites key members of the original MySQL AB developer and services teams", pooling their resources behind MariaDB. As part of this commitment, SkySQL has joined the MariaDB Foundation to donate funds and developer resources to the project. Simon Phipps, CEO of the Foundation said: "it is a pleasure to have a company representing the reunited core team of our code base joining the Foundation".

SkySQL CEO Patrik Sallner will lead the new merged company, while Widenius has been appointed as its CTO by the MariaDB Foundation. The merger is expected to be completed in approximately four months; financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. The new company will continue to operate under the SkySQL name.
