Email Icon For any administrator of a large network, the problem of ensuring each email user has their particular email client software configured quickly and correctly can be a headache. The newly released automx tool sets out to remove that headache by allowing administrators to make use of the auto-configuration capabilities built into a wide range of email clients. Once automx is installed and configured on a server, users need only enter their email address, real name and password in the client to get the automx service to return the appropriate configuration file for their client and have the client automatically configure itself.

Several database backends are available for use with automx, including LDAP and SQL databases. Requirements for installing the program are a web server, Python 2.6 with WSGI enabled, and access to DNS to provide client computers with the autoconfig subdomain.

Details of how to install automx are available from the project's web site, as are packages for Ubuntu, Debian and Gentoo Linux. The software is available under the terms of the GPLv3.
