SilverStripe logo Version 3.0 of SilverStripe's open source PHP-based content management system is approaching with the release of the third and final beta. The company says that it has refined the administrative interface with a "brand new" UI, developed from the results of several usability tests. The new UI allows content and site structure to be maintained by content editors using only a basic text editor. A list-view for page editing has also been added to simplify managing sites with a lot of content. Automatic insertion of media, needing only the URL of the content from YouTube, Flickr or Vimeo is also available.

SilverStripe 3.0 incorporates a new template engine, new object relational manager, and upgraded TinyMCE. Other changes include a restructuring of the code to separate the underlying framework from the CMS, updated developer APIs, a new GridField component, and a new default theme. The system now requires PHP 5.3 or later as it takes advantage of PHP 5.3 features. A brief screencast showing SilverStripe 3.0 features is also available.

Full details of the changes are available in the beta 3 change log and the 3.0 change log. The beta is available to download and SilverStripe encourage testers to report bugs. The most recent stable release of SilverStripe is 2.4.7 released in February. SilverStripe, the CMS and Framework, is BSD licensed.
