Novell has released Service Pack 2 for the Suse Linux Enterprise family. SP2 upgrades the server to version 3.2 of the Xen virtualisation solution and provides complete support of Windows Server 2003 and 2008 as guest systems. The Yast administration tool has been updated. Additional improvements have also been made to the Heartbeat high-availability resource manager, the OCFS2 cluster file system, and support of IPv6 in compliance with US government specifications. New drivers have been provided for network devices and mass storage.

SP2 provides Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop with full support for the Windows NTFS file system and improves integration in an Active Directory. The upgrade to OpenOffice 2.4 – Novell edition – provides better VBA support in spreadsheets and a beta version of the OOXML converter. New drivers and support for UMTS have also been added. Suse Linux Enterprise Real Time response speed has been improved and it now supports fast network connections via Infiniband and 10 GB Ethernet via OFED 1.3.

Novell now offers a Subscription Management Tool (SMT) to subscribers of Suse Linux Enterprise that runs as a proxy, for updates from Novell's Customer Centre. The SMT downloads and distributes updates to all SLE installations via LAN so it's no longer necessary to provide all Suse Linux Enterprise systems with access to Novell's Customer Centre, which required stricter firewall rules.
