The second beta version of KDE SC 4.5 has been made available to download as the developers continue with their plan to release the final version in August. The release, codenamed "Cake", is the result of the developers focussing on stabilisation and bug fixes. Since the first beta, the developers have closed 1643 bugs and 1459 new bugs have been reported. The KDE developers hope to see further testing in the community to help them resolve any further issues. The release is, as for most betas, described as "not production quality" and should only be used for testing.

One change in the development plan for KDE SC 4.5 is that the KDE PIM team, who have been working on an Akondai-based version of KMail, have decided to delay the release of that version by a month. This means that the enhanced KMail, which centralises the syncing and caching of contacts and calendars, will arrive in one of the monthly updates which will follow KDE SC 4.5's release. In the interim, KMail from KDE 4.4 will be maintained by the developers.
