Zoom Beta versions of Gnome 3.2 on Fedora 16.

The GNOME project has published version 3.1.91, the second beta version of GNOME 3.2. In just under two weeks, GNOME release candidate 3.1.92 is to follow. According to the roadmap, GNOME 3.2 is to be published on 28 September, but the developers are currently a few days behind.

The release email emphasises that beta version 3.1.91 is an important stepping stone. Now, the desktop only relies on "introspection-based python bindings" provided by the pygoobject-3 library. Pygtk, gnome-python and gnome-python-desktop are therefore no longer needed. For background information on python bindings in GNOME, see the interview with Tomeu Vizoso and John "J5" Palmieri.

Recently, the GNOME developers also announced that the source code will only be provided in tar archives compressed with XZ starting in November; up to now, there have only been Bz2 archives. This change is only expected to affect future versions; current archives will not be deleted or repackaged with XZ.
