Sales continue to decline at Novell
In the fourth quarter of its fiscal year, Linux distributor Novell saw sales of $216 million, a 10 per cent decline over the fourth quarter of 2008. Novell reported a net loss of $256 million, although its figure includes "a $279 million non-cash impairment charge to goodwill and intangible assets". Income from its operations for the fourth quarter came in at $37 million.
The companies Linux business accounted for $34 million, representing an increase of 14 per cent over the same quarter in 2008. Product revenue from Identity, Access and Compliance Management products declined 10 per cent over the same period last year to $30 million and sales of workgroup products fell 15 per cent to $78 million.
Throughout its 2009 fiscal year, the software provider posted a net loss of $213 million on a turnover of $862 million, of which $149 million came from the company's Linux division. In the first quarter of 2010, Novell expects to receive revenues of between $200 and $210 million and an operating profit of $30 million.
