SGI to sell Cloudera software and services

Linux server specialist SGI is moving further into the big-data market: it has signed a partnership agreement with Cloudera Inc., the provider of Apache Hadoop-based data management. Under the terms of the agreement, SGI will distribute Cloudera software pre-installed on SGI Hadoop Clusters.

SGI's press release stated that it will offer support for Cloudera software and services, including Cloudera University training courses, and that the two companies will "jointly build, sell and deploy integrated, high performance Apache Hadoop-based commercial solutions."

On the same day, SGI also announced a new record in Terasort data processing and analysis benchmark running on Cloudera's Distribution Including Apache Hadoop (CDH). In September 2011, an SGI Hadoop cluster of 20 nodes (Intel Xeon E5630 Processors, 48 GB of RAM) took 130 seconds to complete a Terasort with a 100 GB job. SGI claims superior scaling with its system, and performance 81 per cent fast than an equivalent sized Oracle Sun X2270 cluster.
